Für den schwedischen Piano-Shooting-Star Joel Lyssarides stehen Substanz und Tiefe stets über flashy Konzepten, Emotion und Ausdruck über schierer Virtuosität. Auch die Qualitäten seines langjährigen Trios liegen im Detail: in feinen Nuancen, filigransten Facetten von Harmonie, Groove und Dynamik, die zusammen ein musikalisches Bild entstehen lassen, das weit mehr ist als die Summe seiner Teile. Sein neues Album „Late on Earth“, das am 24.4. bei ACT erscheint, ist für Joel Lyssarides das Ergebnis eines über vier Jahre andauernden Prozesses – einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst und eines kontinuierlichen Austauschs mit Produzent Andreas Brandis. „Die wichtigste Veränderung im Vergleich zu früheren Aufnahmen war, dass ich einerseits bewusst über meine Grenzen hinausgegangen bin und mir gleichzeitig erlaubt habe, loszulassen und nicht mehr nach Perfektion zu streben. Denn am Ende ist es oft gerade das Imperfekte, das unsere Kunst menschlich und interessant macht.“

Imperfektion mag für Lyssarides, der oft acht Stunden am Tag am Klavier verbringt, ein relativer Zustand sein. Doch die Auseinandersetzung mit den eigenen Grenzen ist Ausdruck seiner immerwährenden Suche nach tiefempfundener, aufrichtiger Emotion – und seines ebenso tiefen Wunsches, diese mit dem Publikum zu teilen.

In the end, it is often precisely the imperfect that makes our art human and interesting.”

I experienced this myself back in the 90s while studying at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. Now, thirty years later, I have decided to bring this timeless repertoire finally to the stage. My inner voice whispered to me, „Iiro, now is the time!“ On bass, I selected Kaisa Mäensivu, a passionate artist living in New York City who immerses herself in this style of jazz and performs regularly in the scene. For the drums, I chose Morten Lund, a talented musician who truly understands the American jazz tradition. I invite you to join us in exploring the world of standards and to enjoy these timeless melodies tonight at the A-Trane.

«Most jazz records are made in studios with perfect acoustics. Ours was made in a French château surrounded by vineyards. And the acoustics were perfect too.
The atmosphere was as rich and complex as the region’s finest vintages—a setting, unlike any other for a jazz session.
Morten Lund, Kaisa Mäensivu, and I—each an artist in our own right—had never shared a stage before that day. And yet, in that moment, something clicked. Under the high ceilings of the château, surrounded by barrels of aging wine, we reached into the Great American Songbook and pulled out something fresh, alive, and new.
We love these tunes. They’re like perfect little stories packed into 32 bars. The jazz standards are our roots. These Broadway and Hollywood melodies are the songs that shaped this music—and we wanted to give them our voice, here and now.
Also included on the album are two French songs—a lovely idea from our producer, Andreas Brandis. Hymne à l’Amour is a song I’ve known since childhood. The lullaby Fais dodo, Colas mon p’tit frère is familiar only to French people, but I think we captured a beautiful version of it.
My deepest thanks to Thomas Duroux, who so graciously opened his fabulous Château Palmer to us. Merci beaucoup, Andreas, for the idea of recording standards—you brought a fantastic vibe to the château-studio.

Für ihre vorigen Alben In Water und On The Mo erhielt Eva Kruse viel Lob und Anerkennung. 2015 und 2017 wurde sie mit dem (von einer Jury vergebenen) Jazz-Echo als beste Bassistin national ausgezeichnet. Im NDR (Jazz-Album der Woche) konstatierte Mauretta Heinzelmann: „Die Oboe im Jazz ist selten: Ein reiner Klang, der die Ohren öffnet und zweistimmig mit Saxofon in ganz neue Räume führt. Diese Aufbruchstimmung prägt das ganze Album On the Mo […] Eva Kruse spielt ihre Stärken – die Poesie, den Groove und die Freiheit – gemeinsam mit ihren Bandmitgliedern in alle Richtungen noch weiter aus.“ Ralf Dombrowski bezeichnete Kruses Musik in der BR-Sendung All that Jazz als „stimmungsvoll und eigensinnig pointiert“, Norbert Krampf nannte sie im Journal Frankfurt „Kammerjazz mit Profil und Energie“.

Seitdem hat das Quintett um Eva Kruse bei Festivals (u.a. Elbjazz, Jazz Baltica, Basel Jazzfest, BMW-Jazz Award) und in allen namhaften Clubs das Publikum begeistert. Zwischenzeitlich war Kruse auch als Bassistin von Nils Landgren unterwegs, mit dem sie seit 2007 arbeitet. Mindestens ebenso vielen Menschen dürften Kruse als Drittel der von ihr gegründeten Erfolgsband Trio [em] mit Michael Wollny und Eric Schaefer in Erinnerung geblieben sein, wo sie von 2002 bis 2013 als Tieftönerin und Komponistin aktiv war.

New Legend heißt das neue Werk, das Eva Kruse mit ihrem markanten Quintett im März 2020 im Svenska Grammofonstudion, Göteborg eingespielt hat. Über die Jahre ist die Formation zu einem Organismus mit einer gemeinsamen, individuellen Klangsprache zusammengewachsen. Interaktionen klingen nun noch lebendiger, Klangfarben noch nunacierter, gezielte Reibungen feiner aufeinander abgestimmt. Das dichtere Zusammenspiel erzeugt ein stärkeres Live-Gefühl, gleichzeitig treten die Stärken der Persönlichkeiten klarer zutage. Tjadina Wake-Walker erweitert ihre virtuose, klassisch geschulte Tongebung um subtile Improvisationen, Uwe Steinmetz‘ Pirouetten auf Sopran- und Altsaxophon verschlingen sich bisweilen so eng mit der Oboe, dass die Instrumente kaum mehr auseinander zu halten sind. In anderen Passagen entwickelt der sensible Saxophonist kraftvolle Steigerungen, deren unmittelbarer Ausdruck spannende Kontraste zu lyrischen Passagen bildet. Wie Steinmetz tritt auch Pianist Christian Jormin viel in Kirchen auf, beide wissen also um die Wirkung von ausgesuchten, gezielt gesetzten Noten. Als Schwede ist Jormin zudem in der traditionellen und spirituellen Musik Skandinaviens verwurzelt, sein feinfühliges Spiel trägt darüber hinaus typisch nordländische, von langen dunklen Wintern und dünn besiedelten Landschaften gespeiste Züge.
Der Albumtitel, New Legend, versteht sich als Synonym für neue Erzählungen. Kruse denkt dabei an neue Abschnitte im Leben, möglicherweise auch an politische und gesellschaftliche Zäsuren. Ihre Kompositionen reflektieren Ereignisse und Erlebnisse aus dem privaten Umfeld. „Mit der Musik erzähle ich Geschichten, die mir wirklich am Herzen liegen.“ Viele Titel gehen dank hintergründig schöner Melodien und/oder mitreißender Grooves gut ins Ohr. Die bemerkenswerte Spannweite der CD bündelt das Titelstück zum Auftakt: es reicht vom zarten Oboen-Intro über melodische Linien der Bläser, die von Eric Schaefers agilem Schlagzeug befeuert werden, zu Soli von Saxophon, Bass und Klavier, um schließlich in einem jubilierenden Finale zu kulminieren. Das folgende Passacaglia vermittelt u.a. durch gestrichenen Bass, lyrische Oboenmelodie und einen gemäßigten 3/4-Takt tiefgründige Atmosphäre. Still On The Mo (Der Hahn ist tot) ist dagegen nicht nur wegen seines Titel das humorvollste Stück des Albums. „Ich mag sehr unterschiedliche Musik und schnelle Wechsel“, erklärt Eva Kruse die Vielfalt ihres neuen Repertoires. New Legend begeistert mit variablen Klangfarben, Stimmungen und Tempi, die zusammen ein ausdrucksstarkes und eindrückliches Gesamtbild erzeugen.

Maria Baptist gehört zu den profiliertesten Pianistinnen und Komponistinnen des zeitgenössischen Jazz. Deutschlandfunk Kultur nennt sie »eine der großen Jazzmusikerinnen aus Deutschland«, All About Jazz beschreibt ihren Klavierstil als »unendlich intelligent und stilvoll«. Sie wurde fünf Mal für den Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik nominiert, darunter für Soloklavier-, Kammerjazz- und Jazzorchester-Produktionen.

Ein zentraler Bezugspunkt ihrer Musik ist das Trio mit Fabian Timm am Bass und Heinz Lichius am Schlagzeug. Hier ist im kleinen Format das Großorchestrale ihres Werkkatalogs hörbar: Kompositionen fließen ineinander, formen suitenhafte Rahmen, weite Spannungsbögen wechseln zwischen Intimität und Kraft, Improvisationen durchziehen die Stücke und verweben sich mit dem Material.

In der Reihe Five Special Nights: Trio & Guests spielt das Trio zunächst zwei Konzerte. Danach erweitert Maria Baptist die Besetzung jeweils an einem eigenen Abend mit Philip Sindy, Gabriel Coburger und Jan von Klewitz.

Deutschlandfunk Kultur refers to her as “one of Germany’s greatest jazz musicians,” while All About Jazz describes her piano style as “infinitely clever and classy.“ She has been nominated five times for the German Record Critics’ Award, including solo piano, chamber jazz, and jazz orchestra productions.

A central focus of her music is the trio with Fabian Timm on bass and Heinz Lichius on drums. Here, the orchestral dimension of her music becomes audible in a small format: compositions flow into one another, forming suite-like structures; extended arcs of tension move between intimacy and power; improvisations run through the pieces and intertwine with the written material.

As part of the series Five Special Nights: Trio & Guests, the trio opens with two concerts. Maria Baptist then expands the ensemble on separate evenings with Philip Sindy, Gabriel Coburger and Jan von Klewitz.
