Trio

It´s me, the Monday A-Trane pianist Andreas Schmidt. Since 1995 I played here about 900 wonderful & surprising improvised happenings in music with lots of friends like Jay Clayton, Hayden Chisholm, Dave Douglas, Walter Norris, Mark Murphy, Till Brönner, Sebastian Merk, Andreas Edelmann, Jan Roder, Connie Crothers, Max Andrzejewski, Andy Fite etc.. Here’s what Richard Williams wrote about me in his blog: «If you’re ever at a loose end in Berlin on a Monday night, my advice would be to head for A-Trane, the jazz club in Charlottenburg, where Andreas Schmidt, a pianist, composer and teacher at the city’s Jazz Institut, holds a weekly free-admission session featuring a changing cast. Schmidt is a fine pianist, the salient features of his playing located somewhere between the Paul Bley of the mid-’60s and the Chick Corea of «Now He Sings, Now He Sobs». You might get an idea of his approach if I say that his first album was made (in 1995) with Lee Konitz, and a later one comprised a duo with Gary Peacock. His music is cerebral, but on the evidence I’ve heard it never lacks wit and humanity.» Richard Williams

SMUGGLER RECORDING ALBUM RELEASE CONCERT

Deutsch
English
The expression that the collective is bigger than the sum of its individual parts fits perfectly to describe Tonbruket. The musicality of the band members is already on a high level in their own right. In the meeting with each other something bigger appears. They create a sound world of their own that defies all genre definitions. The music is easiest and best described only as, Tonbruket.
Tonbruket returns with new cross-border and enchanting sounds. On their new album „Light Wood, Dark Strings“, released on October 13th, they deal with what can be described as acute realism.
Tonbrukets members are Dan Berglund on bass (E.S.T., Rymden), Martin Hederos on keys and violin (The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Hederosgruppen), Johan Lindström on guitar and pedal steel (Johan Lindström Septett, Rebecka Törnqvist, Elvis Costello) and Andreas Werliin on drums (Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Fire!). On several occasions Tonbruket have played together with Ane Brun, both on record and on stage.
They released their debut album 2010 and have been awarded several Swedish Grammies for their releases. Tonbruket have also written theater music for a couple of plays staged at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm.

ESPEN BERG TRIO
Espen Berg Trio is an award-winning piano trio from Norway. Outselling concert halls all over the world, the trio referred to as one of the best trios in existence today by Jazz Journal has already made a mark outside their home country. Their music might be reminiscent of Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett, Shai Maestro or Tigran Hamasyan, but above all it’s a personal addition to the legacy of the piano trio and to the evolution of the Nordic jazzscene, featuring a compelling combination of strong melodies and complex rhythmics, immense technical abilities and a highly engaging interplay.
«Big in Japan but yet to really dominate Europe, EBT are one of the better piano-led trios to pick up that heavy baton relinquished by the late Esbjörn Svensson.»
Jazz Journal
Espen Berg Trio has been touring in Europe and Japan frequently, releasing four albums on the Japanese label Blue Gleam. In 2019, the trio made a solid impression on the jazz industry gathered at jazzahead! in Bremen, resulting in a tour in India and gigs at the most profiled clubs in Europe like Ronnie Scotts, Fasching and Unterfahrt. Their third album, Free to Play, was listed in Downbeat as one of the best releases in 2019, and as of spring 2024, EBT’s fifth album is in the making.
Espen Berg was declared a true master of the piano by All About Jazz when releasing his debut album Noctilucent, in 2012. His third album The Trondheim Concert (2022), all improvised and live-recorded, was featured in many of Europe’s leading jazz magazines, and described as one of the finest improvised solo piano performances from the last decade or so by UK Vibe. Espen was awarded Norway’s largest jazz scholarship at Molde Int’l Jazz Festival in 2016, resulting in a commissioned work for the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. He is also known for his collaboration with Silje Nergaard, Hildegunn Øiseth Quartet, A Tonic For The Troops, Seamus Blake, Daniel Herskedal, Marius Neset, among many others. In 2023 he was appointed to official Steinway Artist and premiered his latest commissioned work, Water Fabric, which was written for Trondheim Jazz Festival, Oslo Jazz Festival and Maijazz in Stavanger.

“Antidote” is a smartly crafted combination of all these qualities in a beautiful package. The album never gets boring as the trio keeps moving throughout a wide variety of moods and soundscapes with musicality always being the prevalent force. Rotem has been one of the guitar players to watch for sometime now. This album establishes him as a force on the scene.»

MATTHIEU CHAZARENC
CANTO III
ALBUM RELEASE ON BONSAÏ MUSIC
FEAT: Laurent Derache-Sylvain Gontard-Christophe Wallemme
With this new opus, jazz drummer and composer Matthieu Chazarenc continues to delve further into the world he started exploring in his first two albums Canto (2017) and Canto II (2021). The result is one of a subtle blend of cinematographic inspirations, traversed by classical, Latin but also Gascogne influences. An accomplished melodist, Matthieu manages to convey atmospheres that are sometimes nostalgic and melancholic, and sometimes lively and swirling but always delightfully intoxicating.
Parisian by adoption and at the head of his quartet Canto, the jazzman has kept his compass oriented to the south. Indeed, at the heart of Canto III resonate influences from the South of Spain, the Mediterranean, South America and last but least, the motherland of his southwestern French heritage.
Roots are obviously at stake in his new compositions as they provide a firm anchorage into the land and a sturdy base from which to rise but also as they require protection and preservation. This need for authenticity and integrity is best expressed by Matthieu’s wish to favor the natural timbre of the instruments and their ability to deliver both pure and acoustic tonalities.
To go on his south-bound journey, Mathieu can count on his trustworthy companions Christophe Wallemme on double-bass, Sylvain Gontard on the bugle and Laurent Derache on the accordion. Performing together in the course of numerous concerts and tours since 2017, they have built a great rapport and have reached an idiosyncratic musical identity that can be felt at every single concert. Each member of the quartet brings into play his own color and sound to better serve the original melodies composed by Matthieu.
To close this triptych, the musicians have invited distinguished guests who, in the span of a song, have lent their voices or instruments to join Canto in their musical journey.
Elegant, ebullient, and emotional, this third album by Canto reveals a wide range of musical colors, sublimated by the enthusiastic intensity of playing and performing together.
Canto III will be released on 26th January 2024 by Bonsaï Music.

AKI RISSANEN
«HYPERREAL»
FEAT: VERNERI POHJOLA & ROBERT IKIZ
Hyperreal is the mesmerising new album and project by acclaimed Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen, blending compelling and complex soundscapes with the shimmering emotive trumpet melodies from Verneri Pohjola and the deep drive and irresistible grooves crafted by Robert Ikiz.
As longtime Edition Artist, he has released a series of highly acclaimed trio albums and more recently the solo piano album «Divided Horizon» since joining the label in 2015. With Hyperreal, he has shifted gears, with drummer Robert Ikiz and long term collaborator, trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, seeing Aki switch between piano and electronic keyboards. The sound is deep, rounded and produced, and glistens with Verneri Pohjola’s poignant trumpet sound. Hyperreal is an album about change, about recognising the importance of being, of being aware, of renewal and letting go, as Aki explains: «There’s a change to something new and yet unknown. With the rapid transformation of reality to the AI generated virtual reality or hyperreality, we have to be aware and adapt to these things and distinguish between what is real and unreal».
With an empathetically delivered and unified performance, Aki has produced an album testament of his brilliance as a composer, keyboardist and improviser. Hyperreal is an album that will see his audience grow significantly and lead him to new places, in whichever reality they exist in.
The album «Hyperreal» is released already on the 14th of July 2023 on Edition Records
«Aki is a tremendously musical, passionate and soulful person and has a high energy level. He is one of the best young pianists I have heard in years».
DAVE LIEBMAN
«Rising star around Europe»
DOWNBEAT
«Advanced ideas with a street-sharp attack. Rissanen’s fine trio is a formidable force, with fresh musical intelligence to match flawless techniques.»
THE GUARDIAN
«Hiermit dürfte er endgültig angekommen sein.»

BILL PETRY & BAND
ALBUM RELEASE KONZERT
„CLOSE YOUR EYES“ PRODUCED BY TILL BRÖNNER
“This album simply needed to be recorded! I feel every note in it, and I am proud having been a part of Bill Petry’s debut. You will hear and read a lot about him in the future. Trust me.”

English:
German twosome pianist Stefan Schultze and tenor saxophonist Peter Ehwald enjoy an extended partnership stretching back to college days, so when they pair up a simpatico outing is guaranteed. By recruiting Rainey to complete the trio on Behind Her Eyes they have ensured that the ambience doesn’t become too relaxed. Of the 11 cuts, 6 emanate from the pen of Schultze, 3 from Ehwald while the remaining pair are group improvisations. Their tunes avoid the obvious and at their best take unexpected turns like the mix of stop-start motion and choppy open interludes in “Capucine” and isolated keystrokes and wavering tenor saxophone whistle in the simultaneously wistful and nervy “Core”. Schultze and Ehwald both relish exploring the melodic contours of the pieces, which are often reflective, even dreamy, while Rainey’s cymbal color play remains the epitome of sensitivity. Even in the improvisations they maintain consonance, although tappy drums instill some tension into the lyrical musings of the spontaneous title number while the dampened keys and false-fingered reed squawks in “Whereabouts” prove a welcome contrast. “Tong-Gu” provides the most compelling offering, being more of a departure from the meditative default and one which most effectively utilizes Rainey’s attributes with its shifting meter, variously staccato canter, funky Latin and locomotive propulsion.
